UK Weather Alert: Hurricane Humberto to Bring Heavy Rain and Winds This Week

As Hurricane Humberto moves across the Atlantic, the UK braces for a week of contrasting weather conditions. While the southeast stays dry under high pressure, the northwest faces heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding. The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings, including a yellow rain alert for Scotland and fog advisories across parts of England.

Hurricane Humberto Nears the UK

Hurricane Humberto, which briefly intensified to a Category 5 storm over the weekend, is now a Category 4 hurricane swirling over the southwest Atlantic. While it spared the US, it is heading closer to the UK, raising concerns about severe weather later this week.

According to the Met Office, Humberto—alongside Tropical Storm Imelda—may influence UK weather patterns by triggering a deep low-pressure system near Britain. If this system develops as expected, parts of the UK could face very strong winds and heavy rainfall between Friday and Saturday.

“We’re monitoring this closely,” said the Met Office, emphasizing the uncertainty of the storm’s track.

Yellow Weather Warning Issued for Scotland

From Wednesday 5pm to Friday 6am, the Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning for much of Scotland, including:

  • Central, Tayside & Fife

  • Highlands & Eilean Siar

  • Strathclyde

Expected Impacts:

  • Persistent heavy rain with 200–250 mm over mountainous areas

  • Localized flooding, power cuts, and travel disruption

  • Risk of fast-flowing or deep floodwater, posing danger to life

The Met Office advises preparing an emergency flood kit and checking if your property is at risk.

Dense Fog Across Southeast England

On Monday morning, a separate yellow weather warning was issued due to dense fog covering parts of the east and southeast of England. Visibility dropped to 50 metres in some areas.

Regions affected include:

  • Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk

  • Greater London, Kent, Surrey, West Sussex

  • Thurrock, Medway, East Sussex

Drivers were warned of slow travel times and traffic delays due to reduced visibility.

A Week of Contrasts: UK Forecast Overview

The UK weather this week reflects a northwest-southeast split:

🔹 Southeast (High Pressure Zone):

  • Dry, settled weather

  • Chilly nights and fog patches

  • Gradual clearing with sunny spells

🔸 Northwest (Frontal Systems):

  • Increasing cloud cover

  • Brisk winds and heavy rain midweek

  • Strongest winds expected on Friday

Midweek temperatures are forecast to remain around seasonal averages, with southern regions staying mostly dry despite increasing cloud.
