Storm Amy Causes Widespread Disruption as Ireland Prepares for Milder, Settled Weather This Week

Storm Amy battered Ireland over the weekend, causing power outages, travel disruptions, and tragic loss of life. As the country recovers, Met Éireann forecasts improving conditions with high pressure bringing milder, mostly dry weather and a pleasant weekend ahead.

Ireland faced significant challenges over the weekend as Storm Amy, the first named storm of the season, swept across the country. The storm brought strong winds and heavy rain, resulting in widespread power outages affecting thousands of ESB customers. Multiple flights were canceled, and numerous roads were closed due to flooding and fallen trees, creating considerable travel chaos.

Tragically, the storm also claimed a life. Tommy Connors from Letterkenny was fatally affected during a red weather warning in Donegal on Friday, underscoring the storm’s severe impact.

As of Sunday morning, some areas remain without power, with restoration expected to take several more days. However, there is a silver lining on the horizon. Met Éireann’s latest forecast indicates that high pressure will build throughout the week, leading to more settled and dry conditions.

Temperatures are set to reach a mild 18°C, which is notably warm for this time of year. Next weekend is expected to be particularly pleasant, providing much-needed relief to those impacted by Storm Amy.

The detailed forecast for the week includes:

  • Sunday: Variable cloud and occasional bright or sunny spells in the morning, turning mostly cloudy in the afternoon with light showers. Rain and drizzle are expected in parts of Connacht and Ulster by evening. Winds will be strong and gusty near western and northwestern coasts.

  • Monday: A dry and bright start in Munster and Leinster, with cloudier skies and patchy rain in the north and west clearing through the morning. Temperatures will feel mild, peaking between 15-18°C. Winds remain breezy, especially near the Atlantic coast.

  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Cloudy days with scattered showers early in the week, easing towards the weekend. Winds will ease to light to moderate, with mild temperatures continuing.

  • Thursday and Beyond: Mostly dry, cloudy days with light showers and a gradual transition to settled conditions as high pressure takes hold.

Looking further ahead, high pressure is expected to dominate Ireland’s weather, bringing largely dry and settled conditions into the weekend. This forecast offers a welcome respite from the storm’s disruption and a chance to enjoy more stable weather.
