Snowfall Predicted in Scottish Highlands as Autumn Deepens – What the Weather Maps Reveal

New weather model charts suggest snow could fall across parts of the Scottish Highlands as early as October 7, with rates of up to 3cm per hour. Meanwhile, UK weather experts also warn of a shift in weather patterns due to Hurricane Humbert, and new climate research highlights the growing threat of severe hailstorms in Europe due to global warming.

Snow in October? Weather Maps Show Early Arctic Blast for Scotland

As autumn tightens its grip on the UK, weather forecasts are turning wintry, especially for Scotland. According to the latest GFS weather model charts, snow could begin to fall over the Scottish Highlands and parts of Argyll and Bute from 6am on October 7, with Glencoe, Ben Nevis, and Invergarry among the areas potentially affected.

Forecasters are predicting snowfall rates of around 3cm per hour, particularly west of Fort William, with accumulation of approximately 1cm on the ground. Conditions may continue into the evening of October 8, with further snow expected north of Fort William and Ben Nevis, and even extending into the Cairngorms National Park near Gaick Lodge and Lynaberack.

The Met Office Outlook: Wet and Windy for the North, Drier in the South

The Met Office’s extended weather forecast supports these developments, noting that early October could bring "spells of rain and strong winds across northwestern areas", while southeastern regions may remain mostly dry.

This outlook is partially influenced by the movements of Hurricane Humbert, which is expected to enter the North Atlantic and lose its tropical characteristics. However, this transition is likely to trigger a period of unsettled weather in the UK, especially in the north, with wet and windy conditions likely to dominate the first week of October.

“Confidence in the longer-term forecast remains low,” said the Met Office, citing ongoing Atlantic tropical activity. “But further spells of wet and windy weather are possible, especially in northern regions.”

Climate Concerns: Less Frequent but More Dangerous Hailstorms

Beyond short-term weather patterns, scientists are sounding alarms about the increasing severity of hailstorms in Europe due to climate change.

New research by experts from Newcastle University, Bristol University, and the Met Office, published in Nature Communications, suggests that although hailstorms may become less common, the ones that do occur could be far more destructive.

Lead researcher Dr Abdullah Kahraman, a specialist in extreme weather, noted:

“High-resolution climate models show that while hailstorms may become rarer in a warmer world, the size and severity of hailstones could dramatically increase.”

Professor Lizzie Kendon, climate science lead at the Met Office, added:

“These results are very concerning. The UK may face rare but tropical-style hailstorms capable of causing severe damage in the future.”
