Heavy rainfall forecast sees Met Office issue yellow weather alert

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain in Northern Ireland this Saturday, with potential for flooding and travel disruption. Meanwhile, Wales can expect milder conditions, with the forecast turning brighter and drier into early next week.

As autumn continues to settle in, the UK is experiencing mixed weather conditions this weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning for Northern Ireland on Saturday, September 28, urging residents to prepare for heavy and persistent rainfall between 8am and 8pm.

According to the official forecast, rainfall totals could reach 20–30 mm widely, with up to 50 mm on higher ground, raising concerns about localised flooding and disruption to travel services.

“Outbreaks of rain will move eastwards across Northern Ireland on Saturday morning, likely becoming persistent and heavy across eastern counties during the afternoon before slowly clearing eastwards during the early evening,” the Met Office reported.

In contrast, Wales is expected to start the day cloudy, with outbreaks of rain in the west later in the afternoon—some of which may be locally heavy. A southerly breeze will strengthen throughout the day.

The good news for Wales is that conditions are expected to improve into next week. From Sunday through Tuesday (September 28–30), the weather is forecast to become more settled, with dry spells, sunny intervals, and near-average temperatures. Light winds and only a slight chance of showers will make it feel pleasant overall.

⚠️ What the Yellow Weather Warning Means:

A yellow warning is the least severe of the Met Office’s three alert levels but still warrants attention. It signals that weather conditions could:

  • Disrupt bus and train services, leading to longer travel times

  • Cause spray and flooding on roads

  • Lead to some power outages or interruptions to other utilities

  • Result in minor flooding of homes and businesses

The warning remains in effect until 8pm on Saturday, and residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

As always, stay up to date with your local Met Office updates and plan your travel accordingly.
